Overview
The “urban” centre of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife (pop. 19 429) is home to Stanton Territorial Hospital and four Family Medical Clinics. The Yellowknife HSSA provides community health, primary health care and social service programs to the people of Yellowknife, NDilo, Dettah, Lutsel K'e, and Fort Resolution. The city is a place of beautiful contrasts. On the north shore of Great Slave Lake, modern high-rise towers overlook the rustic heritage buildings of Yellowknife's not-so-distant frontier past. A modern metropolis meets a vast wilderness. The brilliance of summer's midnight sun gives way to winter's dazzling display of the aurora borealis.

Facility/Practice
All clinics operate with a full compliment of support staff including LPN's, billing clerks, filing clerks, janitorial services, and so on. Doctors are left to focus on practicing medicine rather then being distracted by clinic operations.
The specific make up of any doctor's practice can vary depending upon physician skills and community need. Opportunities include visits to smaller northern communities, emergency room work, obstetrics, and clinic practice.
Family Practice Anaesthesia
Yellowknife HSSA staffs four FP/A doctors. These physicians, along with a FRCPC Anesthetist, provide service to the Stanton Hospital. Two operating rooms run full time Monday to Friday, 0730 to 1530 with a third OR occasionally open for dental surgery or visiting urology. FP/A's spend an average of 2-3 days per week in the OR depending upon how many are in town and how many OR's are running. When not in the OR, the FP/A's work in the ED or in one of the medical clinics. Call is usually 1:4.
